REVIEW: Madder Mortem - All Flesh Is Grass Century Media, 2001
6.5/10
Madder Mortem - All Flesh Is Grass - cover art Madder Morten is yet another Norwegian band that was originally formed in 1993 under the name of Mystery Tribe. In 1999 they released their debut album "Mercury" on the British label Misanthropy Records but since the label was closed shortly after the release the band found themselves without a label. Century Media came in to rescue them and here we see the first result of this new cooperation. Century Media has impressed me a lot over the years with one great release after another but this time I was actually a little disappointed. The vocals of Madder Martem are almost solely female and very strong ones and musically they have a lot in common with bands like Lacuna Coil and The Gathering but with a darker atmosphere. I really don´t mind female vocalists, rather the contrary, but Agnete Kirkevaag has got a very unconventional voice and chaotic way of singing that I sometimes find a bit annoying. Perhaps I have been spoilt with too many good releases in a short time but this album didn´t really make my eyes pop out. It is however a pretty solid dark metal album with a somber atmosphere and sporadically beautiful vocals but unfortunately it is a little uneven. Agnete has in fact got a very strong and nice voice. Hopefully we will see a Madder Mortem that continues to grow and develop in the near future. The album was recorded at Studio Underground, Sweden.
