REVIEW: Madder Mortem - Desiderata Peaceville Records, 2006
7/10
Madder Mortem - Desiderata - cover art It has been a long wait for fans of Madder Mortem since the release of the "Deadlands" album in the fall of 2002 but now the wait is finally over. Starting out as a relatively traditional doom metal band, the Norwegians continue their venture into much more experimental realms with their new album. In 2006 it is not quite appropriate to label them as a doom metal band, in fact it is difficult to label them at all. Peaceville Records have always been very selective when it comes to signing new bands, resulting in few releases but of high quality. Agnete M. Kirkevaag's peculiar but firmly characteristic trademark vocals remain as the main attraction of the band but the song writing has become more complex and intriguing with each consecutive release and is today an integral and important part of the overall impression. In many aspects I find Madder Mortem to be comparable to the Swedish band The Provenance as they are both heavily influenced by progressive music while building upon a gothic and / or doomy atmosphere. "Desiderata" is indeed a dark and atmospheric album where the emotional aspect is highly significant.
