I must confess that I had never listened to the band Made Out Of Babies before I received their sophomore album Coward. But it did not take more than a few seconds into the first track on that one to strike me down. The album opens with some screams that makes the hair on your arm stand on end. And then it just gets better and better as the nine tracks will keep hitting you until your ears bleed. The band is often compared with Jesus Lizard and Big Black which is not that surprising since the producer on Coward is Steve Albini (who produced the first of those and fronted the latter). The music is varied but the intensity is maintained and these songs will punch you right in the face without remorse. Vocalist Julie Christmas is really impressing and she is equally convincing no matter if she is whispering or bursting out in blood-curdling screams. She is the one that really holds it all together. I’m already looking forward to hear another album from this band and I hope to get a chance to catch one of their shows ahead.
