The Swedish band Maldo has been active since 2004 and consists of three members. Their self-financed recording "Maldo" [original tentatively entitled “The songs of Maldorores”] contains three tracks dominated by sadness, beautiful melodies and an atmospheric sound. “The Chains” is no exception and it hits you right in the stomach. “Monster” is calmer and its epic sound is very appealing although it hasn’t as strong a hook as “The Chain”. The best one out of the three tracks is however “Cage”; it’s the kind of song you can’t stop humming to even though you just know a small part of it. Still there is one thing about Maldo that keeps me skeptical of their music. It is the fact that they sound very much like Placebo, a little too much. Sometimes you can vaguely hear other influences as well, but most of the time it is Placebo that is dominating the sound, and it is never a good thing to be a copy-cat. If given more time, perhaps Maldo will find their own character and evolve into a great band instead of a mediocre copy of one.
