REVIEW: Malebolgia - Requiem For The Inexorable Self-financed, 2004
5/10
Malebolgia - Requiem For The Inexorable - cover art A two song demo from a band named after the comic character Spawn's main protagonist, Malebolgia. Okay. "The band plays [Death Metal] because they love it and they will continue to do so until they are too old to hold their instruments. MALEBOLGIA works hard at what they do because they love it and sincerely hope that the listener loves their music too." Well, that is a rather honest assertion from the band's biography but fair enough. Onto the music. Looking at the lyrics for these two songs, one cannot help but see that Chris Barnes was an inspiration, including a liberal borrowing of some of his lyrics - "force-fed glass" and the use of "maggots" come to mind. Also, Malevolent Creation creeps in there lyrically, and perhaps thematically - see "they breed" and "erase your fucking race" for examples of implicit – explicit? – racism. Death metal is an oft-maligned genre in and of itself and racism needs not be included. That can be left to the skinheads attending shows who often ruin the experience for others involved. Musically speaking this is more Grindcore than Death Metal. The sound quality is decent for a demo, though the drums sound mechanical rather than organic, like on Vital Remains’ 'Dechristianize' album. The guitars are a bit of a blur but very much in the vein of Grindcore. Vocals are alternately higher pitched rasps and ultra-guttural growls. The full length "abulm [sic]" is to be released in the Fall of 2004.
