Who says you can't go home? Apparently no one in Malevolent Creation. Perhaps taking a cue from fellow Death Metal lifers Suffocation who had strong showings by former/once again band members upon reuniting, Doomsday X has Malevolent Creation sounding revitalized and familiar at once with "four fifths of the Stillborn lineup intact." Back to join constant axeman Phil Fasciana are Brett Hoffman on vocals, Jason [now "Jay"] Blachowicz on bass, Dave Culross on drums, and Jon Rubin on the other guitar. While Blachowicz has the stronger voice (1997's In Cold Blood plainly rules), his is not the so-called classic Malevolent Creation sound. That Blachowicz did not contribute vocals was a bit of a drawback for this reviewer, though Hoffman's unique voice works well within the album's 12 tracks. Another detraction is the overly triggered sounding drums.
To the songs, "Buried in a Nameless Grave" is one of the record's best with its memorable, mid-paced introductory passage giving way to relentless battering. Instrumental "Prelude to Doomsday" is killer in every way, perhaps not slowed down or fettered by vocals. "Upon Their Cross" is easily another highlight of blistering Death Metal majesty. Of note is the appearance of fanboy Mick Thomson (of Slipknot fame) with a guitar solo on 'soon to be fan favorite "Deliver My Enemy."' Also making an appearance is former vocalist Kyle Symons on album closer "Bio-Terror." [I wonder why there are no lyrics for this song....] Malevolent Creation is once again making a brutal statement with their tenth full length album, Doomsday X. Get on board if the early-90s American Death Metal scene makes you smile like a punch-drunk backyard wrestler with a face full of barbed wire.
