Malevolent Creation is one of the many
great death metal bands who can trace their origin back to the Tampa area of
Florida in the late 80's. The band was actually formed in Buffalo in 1987 but
they relocated to Florida a couple of years later. "The Ten Commandments" is
an important album in the band's career. Not only is it their tenth studio
album so far but also their first album on their new label Nuclear Blast, one
of the leading forces in extreme music today. I was very impressed when I
heard their last album "Envenomed" which was unusually melodic. This album
is actually rather different in style but it is still shows that kind of
professionalism that marks every release from the band. While "Envenomed"
was lighter and more melodic their new album shows a tighter, more aggressive
and brutal Malevolent Creation. I was hoping that the band would continue to
explore the more melodic approach of the previous album but after listening to
their new offering over and over again I am actually about to change my mind.
Malevolent Creation is one of the few old American bands who still stand
strong in a time when most bands fail to make a lasting impression. If brutal
death metal is your thing then this album should be in your collection. It
doesn't get much tighter and intense than this. The new vocalist Kyle Symons
(HatePlow) is also doing his job very well to say the least. An interesting
guest performance should be mentioned as well: on "Assasin Squad" James
Murphy (Death, Obituary, Testament etc.) contributes with a few guitar solos.
Stand-out tracks: "The Will To Kill", "Divide And
Conquer".
