REVIEW: Malintent - The Second Coming Abyss Records, 2000
7/10
Malintent - The Second Coming - cover art Malintent is an American band that is hard to classify since they are forging several styles into one. "The Second Coming" is of course the second album from the band, released on their own label Abyss Records, and it shows a band with diverse musical influences. Most of the music could be classified as thrash metal with speed and melody but there are also good old heavy metal traces from the 80's to be found on this album. The music is not amazing but it is definitely far from being bad. The most impressive element of Malintent's musical melting pot is in my opinion the vocals. Jamie Vandelly uses his voice in a very nice way to fortify the music and furthermore the use of special effects like distorted voices makes the whole thing even more interesting. Even though he doesn´t have the best singing voice in the metal scene he has the ability to make something really special with it which I really appreciate. Sounding sometimes like Mötley Crue and sometimes like Megadeth, Malintent presents a diverse mix of metal that I think most fans who yearn for melody and speed would easily come to like. The production is not that good though since it seems to have taken away some of the power and edge from the music. It is however a nice album altogether that most metal fans should check out.
