REVIEW: Malleus Maleficarum - Des Bibles, Des Hymnes, Des Icones… Oaken Shield, 2004
5/10
Malleus Maleficarum - Des Bibles, Des Hymnes, Des Icones… - cover art When only I remember that I applied eagerly to review this album. Adipocere is a good label (Oaken Shield is a sub-division of it) and the name sounded so evil, as always… But, the album is a disappointment. It brings 10 tracks of most ordinary, raw Black Metal, with lots of painful screaming (one of a few good moments), three chord riffs I've heard about a billion times (or more), some growling and some acoustic parts (they are also somewhat interesting). I don’t want to be malicious, but this album reminded me, by its simplicity in riff writing and song structure, of my teenage period Death Metal band. The production is neither reaching standards, sometimes it feels as if the entire album is actually a rehearsal recording, or live at best. I don’t mind a band having a bad production and good music, but here neither is met. I guess the guys are good friends with the label manager. Sorry.
