REVIEW: Malleus Maleficarum - Taedium Vitae Oaken Shield, 2002
6.5/10
Malleus Maleficarum - Taedium Vitae - cover art The French Malleus Maleficarum was formed in 1997, following the demise of a death / thrash metal act called Autopsy (wow, did they come up with that name entirely on their own...?). In 1999 they recorded their one and only demo "Heic Noenum Pax" which took them to where they are today namely on the Adipocere sublabel Oaken Shield. "Taedium Vitae" is their second album and since this is my very first encounter with the band I can not really tell you what kind of progression there has been since their debut release. What I can tell you is that this is not music for those of you who are faint-hearted because this is some of the most brutal black metal there is. The music of Malleus Maleficarum contains a little bit of this and that. Early Marduk pops up as one possible reference but the dark, ominous riffs of Deicide are also evident in several songs. "Deskrating Graves" contains a few Slayer-ish riffs as well. This is definitely not a bad record but then again the band doesn't bring the world anything new either. The best song is actually "Aesma Daeva" where they step outside their traditional black metal concept for a while to create something that sticks out. Nothing groundbreaking or unique that will stick to my mind once the year is over but still a decent release worth checking out if raw, primal black metal from the old school is your thing. It is always nice and relaxing to hear something familiar, right?
