REVIEW: Malte X - Jag Minns Inte, Men Det Va Säkert Jag... Voices Of Wonder, 2003
4.5/10
Malte X - Jag Minns Inte, Men Det Va Säkert Jag... - cover art Recently, if you've noticed, there's been a slew of raw, punk-ish hard rock bands coming from Sweden such as The Hives, The Hellacopters, and the Backyard Babies, to name a few. "Jag Minns Inte, Men Det Va Säkert Jag...", the debut album from Malte X, follows this style closely, but at the same time, sprinkling it with the older sounds of 70's hard rock, to give the Swedish style a slightly different approach. Does it work? Well......, yes and no. At times, it can be quite fun and exciting. But at other times, it can be quite generic, flat, and rather boring and forgettable. "Varning!", for example, is a fun little song that's memorable and catchy, and has a certain charm that could give it radio play on modern rock radio. The ballad ,"Spela Roll", could do the same thing for them, with its catchy chorus. But on the other side of the fence, "Pang På" is a bit flat and lacks real punch. "Ingen Sån Som Räddar Världen" is also a bit boring, as well as "Kärlekshunger". Overall, this is a ho-hum, average album that showcases a band that has the ability to make a good song with exciting and infectious melodies, but judging from this debut, they still have a way to go before they fully reach their potential. Here's to hoping their next album has a bit more of what they can clearly do well, judging from the better cuts of the album: make accessible, rowdy rock with enough melodic hooks to keep you interested.
