REVIEW: Mandragora Scream - Fairy Tales From Hells Caves Caipiranha Records, 2001
7/10
Mandragora Scream - Fairy Tales From Hells Caves - cover art We have come to know that Italy has a very strong metal scene with old leading acts such as Rhapsody and Labyrinth but there are also some new interesting names like Mandragora Scream. Caipiranha Records was formed as a sublabel by Nuclear Blast to sign bands with unusual sounds who didn't quite fit into the pure metal concept of the main label. Mandragora Scream is more of a heavy rock band enshrouded in a gothic atmosphere and with metal touches here and there. As I looked for info on this rather newly conceived band I could not find any note about a female member but if the vocalist on this album is not a female I must be completely deaf (and I am not, yet...). She has a very passionate strong voice and since I am weak for the Italian accent it sounds even better to my ears. Her voice is not operatic at all but simply meant for heavy rock music. As long as the music is heavy like on the two best tracks "Cryin' Clouds" and "Little Zombies" Mandragora Scream is a very entertaining band but most of their softer parts are unfortunately slightly boring musically although the beautiful female vocals make up for it. Either they have to work harder on those or get heavier for their next album, at least if they want to impress on me. This is a decent debut album but the music is not quite as beautiful as the cover art.
