REVIEW: Manitou - The Mad Moon Rising Firebox Records, 2005
7.5/10
Manitou - The Mad Moon Rising - cover art This is a re-release of the debut album from Finnish progressive heavy metallers Manitou. "The Mad Moon Rising" was originally released by the now defunct Rage Of Achilles Records in 2004 and the new version comes with three bonus tracks, including a cover of Bruce Dickinson's "Laughing In The Hiding Bush". Not unlike other bands who deal with progressive music they have been influenced by Dream Theater but Manitou is more straight-forward and the vocals in particular sound more in vein with classic heavy metal. Bruce Dickinson seems to have been a major source of inspiration for frontman Markku Pihlaja. Despite not choosing the most simple of paths, they manage to keep both the music and vocals very melodic which should make this album accessible also to those who are not usually over-enthusiastic about progressive metal. Manitou has found a nice balance between heavy guitar riffs, semi-odd song structures, melody and the softer characteristic of commercial hard rock. Musicianship on a high level, solid vocals, a clear production and decent song writing makes this a very enjoyable album.
