REVIEW: Manowar - Fighting The World Atlantic Records, 1987
8.5/10
Manowar - Fighting The World - cover art Again, a great LP from the American warriors. This time the album contains some songs (namely, the three first tracks of the album) that are the most "hard rock style" that Manowar have ever made, probably. Who in the metal scene hasn´t listened to “Carry On” yet? This song, together with “Blow your speakers”, are two of the most well-known tunes from Manowar. Immensely catchy, tremendously rock, that barefaced a sense of hit, in the end they´ve become immortal songs in the metal comunity, nevermind if you like them or not. But despite this rocker trait, don´t misunderstand me, this is still hard and heavy. Orson Welles appear again in a song with his majestic deep voice, the epic, precious piece “Defender”, highly inspired composition, with that tragic solemn sentiment which Manowar knew to achieve through the pounding drums and the steady rhythms. Welles´ voice isn´t only a feature in the song to make it appealing nor something; instead of that, it´s the main character in the play. Simply awesome!!! Listen to these passages where the voices of Eric Adams and Orson Welles share the vocal line with that delay in between, and you´ll know what I´m talking about. For the first time, Manowar use interludes, but short enough to keep the interest and the natural flowing of the album unaltered. Maybe “Fighting the world” isn´t the hardest Manowar album but somehow it has something that makes it special and absolutely worthwhile. The most violent track is the last “Black Wind, Fire and Steel” (yeah, the words that Manowar use every now and then in their songs...), with that frenzied bass intro and the double bass drum marching on and on in the glorious chorus. A very good record, and everything has been said!!!
