REVIEW: Manowar - Gods Of War Magic Circle Music, 2007
6/10
Manowar - Gods Of War - cover art Cheesus. If you thought of Manowar as epic and dramatic in the past than the words will have a whole new meaning to you after having listened to their latest album "Gods of War", their first studio album since 2002's "Warriors of the World". Maybe it borders on self-indulgence once in a while but if you are an old fan of the band I don't think they will disappoint you this time either. The problem many will have with this album though is that it is barely a metal album. In fact it is more like a movie score where orchestral interludes, intros and outros play important lead roles. There are of course heavy metal moments baked into the mix as well but it seems as if Mr. DeMaio has become a bit inspired by the Italian band Rhapsody (of Fire nowadays) and their symphonic hymns although he has excluded their neo-classical influences and adapted the concept to the traditional Manowar style.

The main problem about "Gods of War" is that the overall idea and concept is ambitious and interesting but the execution and arrangements are often simple and unoriginal. The orchestration and lyrics are decent but the only thing that really impresses a bit is the vocal performance from Eric Adams. I was hoping for more but this clearly is one of the weakest Manowar albums so far but, like I said before, old fans who are not looking for anything remarkable and new will probably enjoy the album nonetheless. The Manowar fighting spirit is still alive.
