Second album from true metal merchants Manowar. You can enjoy the band or not, but one must admit that they have had a really respectable career and also one of the hardest strives on the face of Earth. Ignored or mocked by their own homeland, their success has been based on the sales and the recognizing of the rest of the world, especially in some European places like Germany, Spain or Portugal, and South America where they are one of the leading metal bands. They have had to fight against a lot of things, being one of these the huge scorn they´ve received often in the very metal scene. Their stubborn nature and their deranged love of music have saved them from all these things and they´ve become, without any kind of doubt, one of the heavy metal bands in history. They can be ridiculous sometimes. Maybe even stupid, arrogant or boring. But they have never given up, they never stopped playing true music, and they have one of the most loyal legions of fans around the world. That´s the fact, disregarding if you like it or not.
Well, let´s see, the album... A nice and funny intro ushers us into the rocking “Warlord”. However, the rest of the album breathes a strong epic feeling, marked by the sensation of battle present in all the songs. The sound is better than in “Battle hymns”, quite stronger, and the music is more complex and intricate, even with weird bass lines that Joey DeMaio plays from time to time with those high notes that his bass produces. He´s brave enough to play some dissonant passages, using the bass in a very original way, giving that instrument an outstanding role in the music of Manowar. Here we can find very heavy songs (the mighty “Gloves of metal”, with that groundbreaking, solid guitar line), mystic rhythms in “Gates of Valhalla”, with that combination of a slow mellow intro and a total killer mid tempo, and then with drums resounding on and on all along the song. The best song on the album is in my opinion “March for Revenge”, an absolutely crushing symphony of battle, with melodies screamed by the hammer of Thor itself, and the voice of Eric Adams above all the instruments, is a grandiose, piece of art, epic as hell, excellent. “Into glory ride” did nothing but confirm that Manowar were riding the path of glory, certainly.
