I can´t resist the temptation to talk about how French bands disappoint me every time I hear them. I´ve simply thought there is something in their food, who knows? The truth is that metal bands from that country are mostly boring and horrible, if not pretentious and overrated. Maybe due to my lack of knowledge, maybe because of my selected taste, France is not my cup of mead when it comes to metal bands. One man act Many Moons Ago seemed to confirm this tendency on my personal world. The promo sheet and its brave words didn´t move me whatsoever, so I put on the CD and listened. An accoustic, pastoral guitar invites us to enter the realm of Many Moons Ago´s debut demo, titled “Of Mourning And Standing Stones”. The first real track starts with a frolicking melody and a drum pace which instantly reminded me Opeth´s “In Mist She Was Standing” beginning. Then, a succession of varied sounds reach our ears. Here we have a journey crossing fiery paths: pagan metal, death/black tunes, progressive landscapes, mellow passages... Agalloch´s first album came to my mind quite a few times when hearing this demo. With this I figure out you´re having the picture of this band´s sound on your head. The long songs suggest the variety of styles we finally find here. The main problem to savour these songs is the weak sound. Being this a home-made recording, it has the usual elements of that type of productions: guitars often too high in the mix, programmed drums which sound clinical and repetitive to the ear, etc. The guitar sound partially spoils the listening, sometimes it´s a bit annoying in the higher notes. Taking into account this is just a debut demo, the future for this band is bright. Far better than most of the French established bands, Many Moons Ago offers freshness and the will to transcend in a certain way through their music. Rich guitar work, good taste and a serious effort to achieve a style of his own; I´m eager to know how the next stuff recorded by Luggh will sound. This is promising!
