REVIEW: Maple Cross - Next Chapter Verikauha Records, 2003
6/10
Maple Cross - Next Chapter - cover art After having spent the second half of the 80s and first half of the 90s dwelling the Finnish underground with demo after demo being released without a proper record deal in sight Maple Cross took some time off. In the year 2000 band leader Marco R.J. decided to resurrect the metal machine once again though with a brand new line-up. And what do you know, now they have secured a deal with a new Finnish label called Verikauha Records for the release of the long awaited debut album "Next Chapter". Not much has changed in the band's sound. We still get to hear the same melodic death / thrash metal riffs as have been present on their previous two promo recordings since their resurrection. Except for the more traditional riffs and raw vocals there are some good ol' dirty rock influenced guitar work and also semi-clean vocals which are more of shouts than screams. My earlier reference point as a mixture of At The Gates and The Hellacopters fits fairly well this time as well. The vocals sometimes sound like a death / thrash version of Dio but they are not exactly the best ones I've heard in the genre. Yet again Maple Cross produce a decent slab of melodic metal but there is a little bit too much of the same here and nothing that will make kids beg their parents for money on their bare knees so that they can run off to the store and order this album.
