REVIEW: Maple Cross - Promo 1 (demo) Self-financed, 2002
6/10
Maple Cross - Promo 1 (demo) - cover art Maple Cross is a Finnish band that formed as early as 1985. They recorded a row of demos but never got any worthy offers from labels and after their last demo in 1994 they called it quits since several band members moved out of the country. In 2000 they reformed though but with a completely new line-up except for the vocalist Marco R.J. who is still around. This new demo recording is professionally recorded and there is nothing to complain about strictly soundwise. However, the shrieky vocals lack power and are somewhat weak. Musically Maple Cross sounds pretty much like a mix early In Flames or latter At The Gates and The Hellacopters. The songs are less intense and based more on traditional rock'n'roll riffs than the technical playing of In Flames but the vocals are similar in style to what Tomas Lindstrand used to do when he was in At The Gates. The only difference is that he was, and still is, a lot better at screaming as if his life depended on it. This demo is however pretty good but it is a rather typical crossover recording made by a band who have found themselves stuck between two worlds and lack a strong identity of their own.
