Mar de Grises cannot appropriately fit into any operating genre title, though the description “melodic progressive doom” will do. “The Tatterdemalion Express” is surprisingly good for a first album. It is characterized by melancholy, solemnity, superior sound quality and musicianship. The band seems to have already learned what notable bands took many albums to learn—that is, the fine art of composition. No trial and error here. At times the vocals seem sparse, appearing only here and there, yet it is never a problem as the music is ever-present. Vocals are of the death metal sort though singing take up a good percentage of the vox on this album. For one track Marcelo’s voice sounds almost “goth rock”, though it is punctuated with more dread and completely minus the gay quality. There is also the “Opethy” type vocals in style, but not in sound. It is never lame. It’s pointless for me to attempt to describe the music as it is just too complex. So I will simply say “progressive and expressive, quality music with a doomy feel” and leave it up to you to check it out.
