Marble Arch is the ultimate proof of the fact
that metal and pop music is moving closer and closer together. They are also
the second band from Bollnäs, Sweden, that signs to Century Media (the
first one was Tad Morose) even though they have now relocated to Gothenburg.
The only thing that separates this band from many other melancholic pop / rock
acts from Sweden is that they have a slightly heavier sound and they are also
a bit more forceful in the vocal department. The second track "Silent Dance"
actually sounds very much like the ultra-hit "My Favorite Game" from The
Cardigans. This is actually a great song but somehow it feels wrong that a
band like Marble Arch should be on a metal label like Century Media. It is
very obvious that the label tries to take advantage of the growing popularity
for this kind of gothic / melancholic rock inspired music. The bands who
started this whole new wave in Europe such as Katatonia, Lacuna Coil and The
Gathering are all very good bands but Marble Arch is the equivalent to
receiving your fifth copy of Metallica's debut album, enjoyable but something
you could easily to without. The thing that bothers me the most is that the
vocalist sometimes sounds horrible, especially when they use distortion (at
least I think they do...). Only recommended for hardcore fans of heavy
melancholic rock music (those of you who haven't committed suicide quite yet
that is). The only real highlight is that the new female vocalist of
Finland's Lullacry lended the band some of her vocal
talents.
