The Swedish black metal war machine Marduk continues their
journey into the world of darkness with their new studio album "La Grande
Danse Macabre". Those willing to join them in the dancing will probably find
it hard to keep up with the pace because they have decided to stick with the
ultra-intense black metal from "Panzer Division Marduk" but developing it
further without losing the atmosphere and melody. There are also a couple of
musical surprises on this album but they are all very positive ones so don´t
worry about that. There are even songs on this album that can compete with
giants like Mercyful Fate and Venom. As a summary you could say that this
album is based more on rhythm and melody than speed and brutality if you
compare to the previous releases. Marduk is definitely one of the most extreme
black metal bands around today and labels have even chosen to leave their
lyrics out because of their controversial nature. Because of problems with
previous labels band leader Morgan Steinmeyer Håkansson has now decided to
release their new album on his own label Blooddawn Productions. The fact that
I´m from the neighbouring city of Marduk might make me a bit subjective in my
review but I can assure you that if you´re a fan of the band from before you
will (or at least should) not be disappointed by this release because the
intense eerie soundscapes are still there. Metal doesn´t get any blacker than
this. Come on and join the dance with the rest of us! The album was recorded
at Abyss Studios together with the legendary brothers Tommy and Peter
Tägtgren.
