REVIEW: Marduk - Obedience Blooddawn Productions, 2000
8/10
Marduk - Obedience - cover art After the release of "Panzer Division Marduk" in 1999, the Swedish black metal veterans Marduk had obviously had enough of their old label Osmose Productions. Band leader Morgan now decided to form his own label called Blooddawn Productions and work closely with the new upcoming Swedish record company Regain Records. The first result of this collaboration was the "Obedience" mini album which was recorded in the Abyss Studio in December of 1999 together with the younger of the Tägtgren brothers namely Tommy. With an imagery that could be seen as controversial by some this mini album contains three songs. The first one is lyrically dedicated to the fine art of bondage and disciplin and is pretty much in the same vein as the "Panzer Division Marduk" with extremely fast but still catchy and structured black metal. The second one is about a woman who derives pleasure from graveyards and is also musically different from the opening title track. This one is a little slower and doomier and shows the direction in which Marduk would be heading for their next couple of releases. Finally, closing off the album, they have included a nice cover version of the Celtic Frost classic "Into The Crypts Of Rays". Intensity, violence and atmosphere all in one. Recommended to those of you who wish to see the different sides of one of the finest black metal bands in the world. "Funeral Bitch" would later end up on the following full-length release "La Grande Danse Macabre" in 2001.
