REVIEW: Marduk - World Funeral Blooddawn Productions, 2003
8.5/10
Marduk - World Funeral - cover art These Swedes seem to have found the right balance between their patented high-speed black metal and moments of more well-rounded musicianship here on their 15th(!!) recording. From the opener to "Cloven Hoof", your dangerously fast black metal fix is well met, then supplemented with the killer epic track "To the Death's Head True", which might be my favourite song of theirs to date. "Night of the Long Knives" has a breakdown as murderous as its lyrical basis, while the title track features an almost ethnic sounding riff. All 3 of Marduk's players seem to have developed as musicians, and offer a vicious yet thoughtful performance here, while vocalist Legion lays out the blasphemy on throat. The album fades out with some classical music also found in "A Clockwork Orange", and now accented by some metal to give it an Order from Chaos-like atmosphere. "Panzer Division Marduk" may have been the album to get the world's attention, but it takes albums like this one to maintain it.
