REVIEW: Marilyn Manson - The Golden Age Of Grotesque Interscope Records, 2003
8.5/10
Marilyn Manson - The Golden Age Of Grotesque - cover art Some of you may think that Marilyn Manson is not worthy of being included in a metal webzine like Tartarean Desire but then that is your problem, not mine. Actually, I don't really see Marilyn Manson as metal but more as a shock rocker in the lines of Alice Cooper, KISS and similar artists who have all became famous not primarily because of their music but because of their public image and their ability and wish to shock the world. Of course they have all been capable musicians but as you may or may not realize there have been many others who have been just as good but haven't been given the same attention since they haven't had a strong worked-out image like these major attractions. In a way, I think that it's a shame that people are so naive and easy but then again I also think that there is nothing wrong to have something to show except for the music. While Alice Cooper and KISS didn't really offer anything for the mind or had some kind of message to the world, Marilyn Manson is different. He is a believer, an artist and a thinker. He believes in what he does, he works hard not only with his music but also on his looks, paintings and lyrics and he is also a very creative thinker who uses his work to attack the morals and ethics of a world drenched in hypocrisy in every way he can. "The Golden Age Of Grotesque" was inspired by the underside of Weimar Berlin around 1930 and this is a period in European history that Manson is obviously a big fan of. Musically it is less melodic but more straightforward than "Mechanical Animals" but also more experimental than "Holy Wood". It is darker, more electronic, heavier and more accessible than most of the past releases from the grotesque man in black. Fans will not be disappointed and I'm not either. The only song that I didn't like that much was the title track.
