There are many bands who share the name Martyr but this particular one is a melodic black / death metal band from the Netherlands (not to be confused with a heavy metal band from the same country that existed in the 80s). Having formed in 1997 they released their debut EP for Regimental Records in 2002. Now they have signed with the small American label Black Owl Records for the release of their first full-length entitled "A Malicious Odyssey", a suitable title for a black metal album. This is in fact only the second release from the label who debuted in a very impressive way with an album from Norway's Emancer last year. Musically these two bands have some things in common. They are both apparently influenced by the Dissection melodies but Martyr is a little bit less obvious in this aspect. These Dutchmen also delve into the early Dimmu Borgir sound on this album, minus the keyboard arrangements that is. Their guitar work reminds me a lot of the classic songs from the Norwegian extreme metal superstars. If you like your metal fast, extreme yet melodic then Martyr is one of the promising bands of the younger generation. More is certainly to come from these guys. They still have some song writing practice to go through before joining the big boys but eventually they will get to a point where they stand on their own, if they only put their mind to it and work hard. Black Owl Records have a good taste in music and hopefully they will not fall like many others have.
