REVIEW: Mass, The - Perfect Picture Of Wisdom And Boldness Crucial Blast Records, 2005
6.5/10
Mass, The - Perfect Picture Of Wisdom And Boldness - cover art From the official press release: “The 2nd album from Oakland, California's THE MASS further refines the band's unique brand of malevolent indie-thrash, oozing a crawling heaviness not apparent on earlier releases. Crushing, epic, and melodic... moving beyond the hyperkinetic seizures of the band's 2003 debut full length City Of Dis, here THE MASS whip out blazing, staccato riffs and multifaceted vocal attacks that knife through complex structures and sludgy, epic elegies, as wicked saxophone melodies interweave with angular crunch and creepy nocturnal post-rock. Like a stuttering, bat-winged Bay Area thrash metal outfit arming itself with Louisville/Chicago schooled math-thug asymmetry, pounding dirges, and fierce, evocative mutant jazz flourishes while lobbing some whopping bonged-out grooves. THE MASS continues to evolve its cryptic heaviosity.”

Yeah. I think. The Mass are definitely good at what they do but labeling just what that is will take some doing. Oakland’s raiders invoke the philosophy of the mighty Mastodon in terms of a sheer mountain of influences being blended together in an unexpected but very killer way. It’s almost as if Dysrhythmia’s Pretest, Exodus’ Tempo of the Damned, Emperor’s Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk, and John Zorn’s Naked City were smashed together in a trench of jazz sewage and sprinkled with the ashes of Mr. Bungle. The Mass play some out there stuff that hits more often than it misses, but the misses are still there. If you like the experimental in your music, give it a shot. If Pure Sweet Hell is too Metal for you and you like a bit more jazz in the mix, this is clearly for you. This album is indeed very interesting and definitely potent in small doses. Too much is overkill but that’s part of the plan.
