Paul Speckmann has been sort of a legend in the extreme metal world ever since the 80s when he was one of the most important people responsible for the creation of death metal in America. Abomination, Funeral Bitch and Deathstrike were some of the bands he was playing with in Chicago about twenty years ago but the most important and influential band is probably Master which is the only one of his old bands which he has kept to this date. Now having relocated to the Czech Republic he has recruited drummer Zdenek Pradlovsky and guitarist Ales Nejezchleba from the Czech thrash metal band Shaark. The album title "The Spirit Of The West" could imply some political opinions with which you may or may not agree but no matter what my reviews will never be based on the lyrical content or the opinions of the musicians but on the music alone. The thing with Master and Paul Speckmann is that you always know what you get. That is also the case this time. Quality death metal that makes you wish for the good old days when bands like Death, Possessed, Morbid Angel and many others started rising from the underground. Shredding guitars, a few select solos, the dirty raw vocals from Speckmann himself and some punky thrash metal influences is what this is all about. Even though Master doesn't show much of progression from one album to another Speckmann has always known how to deliver what the fans want and he has once again succeeded in his mission to keep the underground burning. This is for all death metal fans who have been around since the beginning.
