REVIEW: Masterplan - MK II AFM Records, 2007
7.5/10
Masterplan - MK II - cover art Masterplan have aptly decided to name their third album "MK II". Now, this may not seem like a logical title at all at a first glance but it marks a major change within the band as they have parted ways with the Danish David Coverdale clone Jørn Lande who is featured on their first two albums. Also, former Helloween skin basher Uli Kusch has been replaced by drummer extraordinarie Mike Terrana. Stepping in behind the microphone we find former Riot frontman Mike DiMeo who I had a hard time getting used to at first but after having listened to the album a few times I think he is doing quite a decent job. His voice is nonetheless slightly more anonymous and plain which sometimes makes me want to listen to the Jørn Lande albums again instead of this one. It does take time to break in new members to a band though and I am sure that Mike will fit in better next time. There is only one problem, his singing works best in the softer, more laid-back sections where he even impresses even a skeptic like me. Musically Masterplan have not changed much and fans of melodic heavy metal with a progressive edge will probably not be disappointed this time either. Still, their least impressive release to this day.
