REVIEW: Mathyr - Mandraenken Animate Records, 2004
8/10
Mathyr - Mandraenken - cover art Mathyr exists since five years ago and in that period they managed to create own style that combines Death Metal, Black and old school Thrash in a furious way. Their first CD for Animate Records brings 8 songs and almost forty minutes of headbanging pleasure. I say that 'cause this is ideal mixture of aforementioned styles, seemingly purposefully made to increase headbanging and moshing possibilities. Guys took what they liked most out of each extreme Metal genre and made their own kind. This success in combining well known and crowded genres is main advantage of Mathyr. Music then has a lot of feel from late eighties, and by that it reminds me on their countrymates Desaster. Band mentions other names as their influences, like: Mayhem, old Satyricon and Slayer. Basically, all musical elements are well fit together and there’s no obstacle to your enjoyment. As for the vocals, the band utilizes both growl and screaming one, and that combination is good for atmosphere, it does the work. Only complaint might be directed towards the production which I think might be more powerful and maybe more clear, although this way is not bad either.
