REVIEW: Maudlin Of The Well - Bath Dark Symphonies, 2001
7.5/10
Maudlin Of The Well - Bath - cover art Dark Symphonies has made themselves a name as one of the only labels for metal of the darker and more experimental kind and Maudlin Of The Well are without a doubt one of the most unconventional bands ever to exist on this planet. Have you ever heard of a metal band playing clarinet, flute, cello, viola, piano and hammond organ? Well, perhaps you have but if so here is one more. The music of Maudlin Of The Well has been labeled as progressive astral metal which is perhaps a good name for it although it defies all attempts of a good description. Their debut album was released last years and since then they have recorded around two hours of music that is now being released on two albums at the same time of which "Bath" is one. The music is as weird and obscure as before and displays a wide range of emotions - from the raging death metal on "They Aren't All Beautiful" to slow psychedelic tunes that can be found on most tracks. The dominating emotion is however melancholy with a strong new age feeling. If you haven't heard this band yet you definitely have to because there is no way to describe their sound without sounding stupid (perhaps I already do...). If you like The Beatles and perhaps also death metal this could be a perfect band for you.
