REVIEW: Mayhem - Grand Declaration Of War Season Of Mist, 2000
8/10
Mayhem - Grand Declaration Of War - cover art Mayhem is one of the best black metal bands in the world at the moment and one of many such from Norway. This album is full with great melodic riffing and extraordinary drumwork by Hellhammer. The music is powerful and full of energy and you can really feel their hatred against christianity. Some black metal consists of almost nothing but pounding drums but this is not the case with Mayhem. They shift from slow to fast, from heavy to soft and show their musical skills in the best way possible. The vocals are mostly black metal screaming with spoken interludes from time to time. There are also sometimes clean vocals. You can also hear some electronical Samael touches to the music. This is one of the best black metal releases ever and the recording is pretty much perfect with the very best in sound quality. I´m not that big black metal fan but this album is really great. If you haven´t already got this album yet you have missed out on one of the best black metal albums of the year.
