REVIEW: Maze Of Torment - Death Strikes Necropolis Records, 2000
8/10
Maze Of Torment - Death Strikes - cover art When listening to a death metal record it often doesn't take long before you are able to make a correct guess as to whether it is a Swedish band playing or not. The legendary melodic Gothenburg sound has influenced hundreds of new fresh bands around the world and Maze Of Torment is one of the Swedish bands who have adopted the unique sounds of pioneers like At The Gates and In Flames. They are however equipped with creative minds of their own and this is not just another copycat band although many people probably think so. Maze Of Torment is however more brutal than most of their Swedish peers with vocals closer to the black metal field. The music is still very melodic and technical as most Swedish bands are these days. I´m not that overwhelmingly fond of the dirty sound that comes from a production in the Sunlight Studio (Dismember a.o.) but I suppose it fits the theme rather well. The speed and immense aggression that comes from this album makes up for that though and this is a recommended composition of deadly symphonies for fans of brutal but still very technical death metal of high quality. The subject of death might have become a bit worn-out but everyone can't try to become the new Opeth or In Flames and succeed at it, can they?
