REVIEW: Maze Of Torment - Hammers Of Mayhem Black Lodge Records, 2005
8.5/10
Maze Of Torment - Hammers Of Mayhem - cover art The Haunted are the undisputed masters of modern Swedish thrash metal in my opinion. That is the cleaner, more polished thrash. When it comes to the rawer, blackened side of thrash, Maze Of Torment from Strängnäs are in the very same position. Label problems have stalked them throughout their entire career, which has lasted for over a decade, but they have never surrendered but forged their way through these minor obstacles with the power of will. Now they have three new members in the band but it doesn't matter because they still sound like Maze Of Torment. Nothing has changed, the music is still based on razor sharp guitar riffs, aggressive black vocals and an overall very dirty yet clear production. The song writing is solid as usual and we are offered an extra treat with the inclusion of a very good cover of Venom's beautiful Christmas carol "In League With Satan". I do not deny that the songs are rather similar to each other but when they sound as good as they do I don't really care. My favorite would perhaps be "Dead Soul" which does stick out a little from the rest with its somewhat slower groove. Maze Of Torment has risen from the underground to become one of the finest Swedish extreme metal bands, no doubt about that.
