REVIEW: Maze Of Torment - Hidden Cruelty Black Lodge Records, 2007
7/10
Maze Of Torment - Hidden Cruelty - cover art It's time for another dose of relentless Swedish thrash metal as Maze Of Torment release their 6th full-length album "Hidden Cruelty". I have become rather fond of this band that has been around since the early 90s, having fallen in love with their aggressive and intense mix of black, death and thrash metal that has characterized their past couple of releases. Lately a few line-up changes have occurred within the band and with line-up changes musical changes are usually to follow. This is also the case with Maze Of Torment. Of course I don't know if the shift in musical direction depends on the change of personnel or not but this time they have opted for a much more Bay Area oriented sound, in particular inspired by the mighty Slayer. While they still do what they do very well I think it's a shame because the band had found their own niche and "Hidden Cruelty" lacks the sharp and raw edge of the previous couple of albums. Some of this can be accredited to the production which is a bit too thin and polished for a band like Maze Of Torment. A slight disappointment but far from a complete disaster. Go, Slayer, go.
