REVIEW: Maze Of Torment - The Unmarked Graves Hellspawn Records, 2003
8.5/10
Maze Of Torment - The Unmarked Graves - cover art Fourth full-length album from the Swedish band Maze Of Torment and also the fourth label try. This time they have left Necropolis Records who apparently didn't give them the money they were promised and instead signed a new deal with the native label Hellspawn Records, run by David Parland (Dark Funeral, Necrophobic). They have also changed to a new studio. Last time they recorded at Sunlight but now they have chosen Abyss for the recordings which results in a sharper and less dirty sound than they had on their previous album "Death Strikes". Other than that they have not changed that much which I am glad to hear. Yet again we are offered an aggressive and furious mix of extreme metal with influences from old-school thrash, brutal death metal and melodic black metal. Maze Of Torment remind me a lot of the kind of albums that No Fashion Records released in the 90's but this is more technical and elaborate. Catchy guitar riffs, raw vocals and a few guitar solos have been thrown into the mix. If you like old-school extreme metal with a perfect production and a touch of evil then Maze Of Torment is for sure one of the better bands at the moment. The Misfits cover "All Hell Breaks Loose" was also a great inclusion. Maze Of Torment is one of the most underrated bands in Sweden.
