When guitarist Logan
Mader (ex-Machine Head) left Soulfly in January 1999 he recorded a 3-track
demo and asked Whitfield Crane (ex-Ugly Kid Joe), who had just left Life Of
Agony, to lend his voice. Today their band is known as Medication and
features, except for Mader and Crane, also the guitarist Blunt
(ex-Adayinthelife), bass player Kyle Sanders and drummer Roy Mayorga (ex-Ozzy
Osbourne / Soulfly). Their debut album "Prince Valium" contains thirteen
tracks of music that bridges between modern pop / rock and heavier grooves á
la latter day Ozzy Osbourne. There is no doubt that these guys are world class
musicians but there is something missing to make this album real interesting.
It will certainly appeal to MTV but the overall sound is unfortunately rather
plain with standard riffs and no brave exciting new moves. The only thing that
shines bright through the gray fog curtain of this album is the vocals from
Whitfield Crane. The inherent melancholy of Whitfield's voice isn't very
suited for the kind of music Medication perform though since he needs some
melodies to work with, not just a chunky groove. If you are not into modern
American rock / metal I would stay away from this if I were you. The album
isn't that bad but it only works as background music with a few exceptions:
"Loaded Gun" is a nice display on the vocal qualities of Crane, "False
Idol" is a wonderful rocking track with a terrific groove and the main riff /
chorus of the title track simply kills. This is a typical hit album with a few
really good ones and the rest plain
boring.
