REVIEW: Megadeth - Risk Capitol Records, 1999
9.5/10
Megadeth - Risk - cover art This album has got a whole new Megadeth sound on it - it's musically more massive, sometimes a little too noisy without a real melody, and it's a little softer and slower. A lot of metal fans think this album was a real failure but I don't really agree. Of course there are a few songs that aren't too good on this release but as a whole it's great music. Some of the best Megadeth songs ever can be found here - the first track Insomnia with a strange oriental sound to it and the 6th one The Doctor Is Calling, an emotional melodic song with great vocal lines (of course you can never complain about Dave Mustaine's vocals...). The two final 'Time' tracks are also very nice slow metal ballads. This is an album that you need to listen to several times before you really like it. I promise you that if you're a fan of Megadeth music this record will grow on you even if you don't like it the first time. The energy is still there and this is definitely not the end of Megadeth, even though it might be a bad idea to continue in this direction. This release does not only include the real Risk disc (say that twenty times fast!). There is also a bonus disc with one track from each of their previous releases except the first one. It might not be the best track from every album but it should give you an idea of what earlier Megadeth music sounds like if you haven't heard it before.
