REVIEW: Megadeth - So Far, So Good...So What? Capitol Records, 1988
8.5/10
Megadeth - So Far, So Good...So What? - cover art On the third release from Megadeth there has been some changes in the band's line-up. From the time of the Peace sells...but who's buying? release only Dave Mustaine and David Ellefson still remain in the band. The drummer Gar Samuelson has been replaced by Chuck Behler and guitarist Chris Poland by Jeff Young. These two were not to stay too long in the band either and this is the only release where they got a chance to play. The real brain behind the band is of course Dave Mustaine who writes most of the music and lyrics (some of it together with David Ellefson). He also produced the album together with Paul Lani. The new band members seems to be doing a good job on this album and the music sounds pretty much like their previous album - fast, aggressive and melodic metal with great vocals by the unique voice of Mustaine. The lyrics are a lot better than on the first two releases which shows that the band is becoming a little bit more mature. Now the lyrics aren't about murder, violence and sourcery anymore but instead about nuclear warfare, human emotions and governmental manipulation and control. Although it's a very good album it's still very short like the first two ones with eight songs but one of them is instrumental and another one is a cover version of Anarchy in the U.K. Unfortunately that brings the grades down a little.
