REVIEW: Melencolia Estatica - Melencolia Estatica Aeternitas Tenebrarum, 2006
8/10
Melencolia Estatica - Melencolia Estatica - cover art From the Italian label Aeternitas Tenebrarum we have this piece of melancholic black metal under the name of Melencolia Estatica. The album, which comes to be the first creation of this one-man-band, is called the same as the band and it is divided in four tracks, named "Meditatio I, II, III and IV" To go on with the music itself, we have an excellently-made black metal album, a very coherent melancholic entity which through these 4 passages manages to portray an ambience of sadness and pessimism. I would have really enjoyed more the album if the lyrics were printed on the booklet... I hope they are included in the final product (this "lyric demand" will be a constant part of my reviews, hehe). I will not analyze each song independently, because all of them share a similar level of quality, and because they all constitute a whole homogeneous musical being. Here we find different grades of aggressively, from an intense melodic black metal (which reminds in some points of Angantyr and similar stuff) to more acoustic passages which echo bands like burzum or wigrid (and some times with a feeling closer to doom metal), but with a cleaner production and a more technical instrumentation. I would like to underline this point: Though this the first album of an unknown (at least by me, hehe) band, the sound quality is one hundred percent professional and all the instruments are in their correct place and, moreover, well executed. This is doubtlessly much more than what we may expect from a debut album and consequently, a completely recommended work.
