REVIEW: Mendeed - This War Will Last Forever Nuclear Blast, 2006
8/10
Mendeed - This War Will Last Forever - cover art Lately one of the world's most important metal labels - German giants Nuclear Blast - have had trouble signing new interesting acts but luckily they struck gold with Communic and now they have found another talent from the UK. In a successful attempt to stay one step ahead of the competition they have avoided signing run of the mill metalcore acts such as Century Media and Metal Blade and instead concentrated on finding a truely unique and personal band. Thus, I present unto you Mendeed, a band who may not be a brand new acquintance to all of you as they already have a couple of releases out via Copro Records and Rising Records. Starting out at the dawn of the new millennium, these Glasgow natives started out as a straight-out heavy rock / nu-metal but as time passed they became heavier and more melodic at the same time, incorporating structural elements in the vein of At The Gates, Slayer and Iron Maiden. I don't know if it was a deliberate shift of focus but the change they made was definitely a step in the right direction. "This War Will Last Forever" does include the usual metalcore components with breakdowns and the usual contrast between harsh and clean vocals but it is much more dynamic, intense and complete than most releases from today's scene. It is no coincidence that this young band has already had the pleasure of supporting bands like Anthrax, Cradle Of Filth, Slipknot and Trivium. It will be very interesting to see where Mendeed are going in the future. For now they have at least found a successful and well balanced formula that is likely to be appreciated by many.
