If the thought of pre-Blood Mountain Mastodon (read: not overrated [read: when they didn't suck]) fighting with Clutch's Neil Fallon and Eyehategod over a gallon of resin while on quaaludes sounds appealing, Mendozza's White Rhino should be right up your stinkin' alley, friend. Mendozza are a mighty power trio hailing from the wastelands of Vancouver and they're here to cause distress and destruction. What a great record, this White Rhino, and to think it was released independently in 2007. Thank ____ (insert deity du jour) that Reversed Records chose to get this out to a wider audience.
The band themselves claim to sound like "Entombed dating The Melvins while making out to old Metallica" and while funny, it ain't all fiction, though that Metallica bit seems unfounded. Sick, sick, sick.... But that's a good thing, a very good thing. This type of sludge ain't for everyone but those in the fold will surely have reason to rejoice. White Rhino was mixed by the legendary Billy Anderson (The Melvins, Sleep, High On Fire, etc.) and it rules, plain and simple. If checking out this sort of sickness, make sure both your therapist and moonshine supplier know.
Standout tracks? The whole damned thing. Seriously. Check out the final track real close like, junior. Past the 9:17 mark, before which are a bevy of strange audible oddities, appears a cover of The Melvins' "Hooch." So if you (A.) sorely miss Artimus Pyledriver, (B.) think Nashville Pussy is too clean sounding, (C.) consider Alabama Thunderpussy to be a mainstream act, or (D.) all of the above, you owe it to yourself to check out Mendozza. This writer wonders where their apparent southern inflection originated since White Rhino sounds as murky and sludgy as a bayou swamp (check out the Down II-sounding interlude). In a word: KILLER.
