REVIEW: Menhir - Ziuwari Skaldic Art Productions, 2002
7.5/10
Menhir - Ziuwari - cover art The German band Menhir are no newcomers on the metal scene. They were formed in early 1994 and have already released two full length albums and one mini album through Ars Metalli before signing a new deal with Skaldic Art Productions, the label run by Vratyas Vakyas, the mastermind behind Falkenbach. Therefore it didn't really come as a surprise when the music reminded me slightly of Falkenbach but even more of the Swedish viking metal band Mithotyn, albeit more symphonicically epic and with a cleaner sound. There are pompous keyboard arrangements, majestic viking metal choirs and folk music influences, everything that will make heathen fans of pagan metal happy. Menhir are not the only band in the world who plays this form of metal today but they were one of the first and they are also one of the best out there today. The song structures are somewhat similar to what Bathory used to do during their viking era but more dynamic. Although I still prefer Mithotyn, Thyrfing and Suidakra, "Ziuwari" is a new quality addition to an already very interesting genre and will surely appeal to fans of the aforementioned bands. Stand-out tracks: "Valhalla", "Steinsburg".
