Brazil has had a very strong scene along the years, having given birth to many talented and influential bands like Sepultura, Sarcofago, Ratos De Porao, Overdose, Mistifyer, Abhorrence and Krisiun, amongst others; well, it seems like Brazil strikes again, this time with their natives Mental Horror, a band that has been in the scene for about twelve years so far, bringing more sickness and hatred to the world in the way of Death Metal, but be advised, this is not your typical Death Metal band, what Mental Horror has to offer is pure chaos, hatred and raw brutality in the form of ultra fast, violent and blasphemous Death Metal odes infested with blasphemy and anti Christianity. Of course, those familiar with Krisiun and Abhorrence might wonder if there’s any similarity with those bands and, truth be told, there is, a lot actually, specially if you go back to Krisiun’s early releases and Abhorrence’s ones as well. Nevertheless, you can feel in their music a retrospective reminiscence to the rawness and feeling of old sounds and bands that either disappeared or changed directions in their careers, and I am pretty sure that nostalgic fans of the purest forms of evil music such as Possessed, Incantation, Morbid Angel’s Altars Of Madness, Marduk and the likes, will instantly click with Mental Horror’s music. Other aspect that I find attractive in this CD is the recording itself, which adds more simplicity in a way that this is not your typical top notch high tech recording full of samples and effects that most of times subtract that minimalistic essence of heaviness and hatred death metal bands possessed when the whole death metal scene started and that I, as an old school death metal fan appreciate after all this saturation of technology you hear in most of bands’ sounds’ nowadays. Bottom line, if you like your metal raw, violent, fast and loaded with hatred, give Mental Horror a listen and I’m pretty sure you’ll love them.
