REVIEW: Mephistopheles - Modern Instincts Purity Last Episode Productions, 2001
6.5/10
Mephistopheles - Modern Instincts Purity - cover art I have considered Mephistopheles as one of the greatest melodic black metal band from Germany for a few years now, simply as they are great musicians, and that reflects itself in their albums! "Modern Instinct's Purity" is their 3rd outlet, and is a step further from their previous album "Songs of the Desolate Ones", with more technical performance and also more a death metal approach than the usual black metal with the clean vocals. They incorporate the melodies in a sweet way, avoiding the usual one-lined melodies, but give it more power and heaviness in thick guitars and rasping deep vocals. The variation has also been maintained in most of the material, doing a little of sweet choirs and clean vocal performances, although I miss from their previous album the very clean vocals that pulled that one out from the crowd of medium releases. It is nevertheless a good performance they show here. Although nothing new, it's well played and very professional as an album, that should satisfy the lovers of melodic black metal. Do not fail to check out the monsterriffs in the albums best and longest track "Bastard Blood's Prosperity" as well as the bonus video on the CD!
