REVIEW: Mercenary - Everblack Hammerheart Records, 2002
8/10
Mercenary - Everblack - cover art Denmark is beginning to catch up on the other Scandinavian countries as it comes to producing interesting metal bands. Mercenary isn't exactly a new band since it was formed back in 1991 but it isn't until now that I have noticed them which is a shame because they are a very good band. Prior to this album they have released one mini-cd and one full-length album so they aren't really an unexperienced band. The music of Mercenary is hard to describe but one thing for sure is that this is a very atmospheric album while still being brutal and heavy which may sound a little strange. This means that there is a wide variety of musical influences to be found in their music which sounds like a mix between The Haunted and Gardenian. I especially enjoy the use of different vocal styles which adds an extra touch to the music. It is not easy to impress me these days but Mercenary have managed to do so and if you're in for an energy rush of Scandinavian death/thrash metal at its best (well, at least almost at its best) I would definitely recommend you to check out this Danish band. Stand-out tracks: "Darkspeed", "Bulletblues" and a few others...
