REVIEW: Mercyful Fate - Dead Again Metal Blade Records, 1998
9.5/10
Mercyful Fate - Dead Again - cover art I am very glad that King Diamond didn't lay Mercyful Fate to rest for good in the late 80's because even though King Diamond is a great band as well the spirit of the 80's lives on with MF. "Dead Again" starts off with a fast yet melodic track about the witch burnings in the early 1600's. As we are used to by now there are a lot of tempo shifts on this album which allows King Diamond to use his voice to the fullest. There is no other like him and he is at least 50% of what makes Mercyful Fate so special. We should not forget about the rest of the musicians though because the music is almost as amazing as the vocals with a huge amount of killer riffs. Occult lyrics, dreamy melodies, both fast and slow passages makes this a very good release from one of the best and most influential metal bands ever. The metal scene has really developed during the last ten years but Mercyful Fate continues to play their classic style of heavy metal and they're doing a hell of a good job.
