REVIEW: Mercyful Fate - Dont Break The Oath Roadrunner Records, 1984
10/10
Mercyful Fate - Dont Break The Oath - cover art Although several Danish bands have made it onto the international metal scene during the 1990's Mercyful Fate is the only native band who have become real famous. "Don't Break The Oath" is no doubt one of the band's best albums ever and even one of the best metal albums of the entire 1980's which was a great decade for metal as we all know. At this time the band was still controversial and were receiving lots of critique from different people around the world. King Diamond was in other words sort of a metal rebel back in those days and this did of course help him to rocket his career. Compared to the later releases from the band "Don't Break The Oath" is lyrically more satanic and the vocals are a little weaker but there is a lot of passion and atmosphere on this album that has been lost in the 90's. Most bands who are comprised of talented musicians are at their strongest in their early days and this is also the case with Mercyful Fate. This album has an important place in the history of metal and if you don't have it already go out and get it right away. If you enjoy metal you can't possibly be disappointed.
