"In The Shadows"
was the first album from the reunited Mercyful Fate who had broken up in 1985
when King Diamond began his solo endeavour. Back together was the legendary
line-up of the king himself, Hank Shermann, Michael Denner and Timi Hansen.
Hungry to show the world once again what Mercyful Fate was all about they
delivered one of the most impressive albums ever released. Every song has that
unique Mercyful Fate atmosphere to it with plenty of wonderful guitar riffs,
nice solos and on top of this King Diamond makes one of his strongest vocal
appearances ever. He is simply one of the most amazing metal vocalists the
world has ever seen and the range of his voice is incredible on this album.
Some may write him off as over-dramatical and theatrical but you have to admit
that there are no others like him and I doubt there will be any in the future
either. At this time the spirit of "Don't Break The Oath" still lived with
the band and this is definitely an album that every metal fan should own.
"Egypt", "The Old Oak" and "Is That You, Melissa" are some of the best
songs Mercyful Fate have produced and there is no need to think twice about
purchasing this album if it is not already part of your collection. A notable
guest appearance should also be mentioned as no other than Metallica drummer
Lars Ulrich performs on the final track of the album. I got my copy of "In
The Shadows" cheap in a second hand store but I can't understand the poor
guy who brought it there. He must have been desperate for some
cash.
