REVIEW: Meridian - The Seventh Sun Season Of Mist, 2002
6.5/10
Meridian - The Seventh Sun - cover art Meridian is a new band from Geneva, Switzerland, that formed in the autumn of 1999. In early 2000 they recorded a mini album called "Daydream In The Postdementia Millennium" that was well received by fans and media all over the world and led to a contract with the French label Season Of Mist. It can't really be argued that Norway is the home of black metal but there are more and more bands who want to compete with the old masters. Some Norwegian bands have not stopped developing but moved into some kind of post-black metal genre such as Satyricon, Mayhem, DHG and Arcturus. These are bands who have created albums that will be remembered as groundbreaking and unique monuments of the late 90's metal movement. Meridian are trying to ride on the wave of success and to some degree they have accomplished this. Their music sounds like a brighter mix of Emperor and newer Satyricon but with very few slower passages and some twisted electronic sampling. There are some great groovy black metal on this disc such as the second track "Immortal Ancestry" but it is still an album that will be easily forgotten since it will be hidden in the shadows of the great ones and does not really bring us anything new and fresh. Decent vocals by Morgul's Jack D Ripper and a close to perfect production by Terje Refsnes still makes it a fairly enjoyable release. I am still waiting for another Coroner, Celtic Frost or Samael to come out of Switzerland...
